The Right Amount
“No, you’re too invested,” they said. “You’re too close to it, too passionate. You care too much. You can’t see the big picture.”
Oh, I thought. I guess I’m wrong, then.
“Not you,” the others said. “You don’t understand because you’re not in it. You’re not inside it, you can’t know. You’re detached and ignorant.”
Oh, I thought. I guess I’m wrong, then, too.
Some day, maybe, I’ll achieve the exact right distance from things and then I’ll understand. Then I can speak and be allowed inside. In the meantime, I’ll just stand in the wet sand between the land and the sea, hoping for a ship or a car to arrive before I suffocate or drown.
